International travel continues to be the driving force propelling Portugal’s thriving summer tourism season. Recent data from SiteMinder, the world’s foremost open hotel commerce platform, highlights the significant role that foreign bookings have played in shaping the country’s hospitality landscape. As of August, an impressive 77% of all reservations made for Portuguese hotels originate from international visitors. This marks a notable increase from 75% in the same period last year and a substantial leap from the 64% recorded in 2021.
The current volume of reservations secured by Portuguese hotels is a remarkable 21% higher than the record-breaking figures witnessed in 2019. In terms of booking momentum, Portugal surpasses its neighboring countries such as Spain, France, and Italy, emerging as the leader.

At 77%, Portugal boasts the highest proportion of international bookings among key European destinations. It narrowly edges out Italy, where the figure also stands at 77%, followed by France (62%), Spain (57%), Germany (39%), and the UK (35%). Looking ahead, the trend remains robust, with 86% of confirmed bookings for Portuguese hotels in September originating from international travelers. This number further rises to an impressive 91% for bookings in October.
August and September retain their significance as pivotal months for the local tourism sector, with over 65% of stays anticipated to occur before the conclusion of September. Notably, Portugal’s strong momentum in hotel bookings prevails despite the increasing cost of hotel rooms across the nation in 2023.
